Buddh International

Quite apart from being arguably another trick question (I wonder how many people answered "Airport"?) this question is about six years out of date.

The Indian Grand Prix, which was first held in October 2011, was suspended for 2014 and subsequently cancelled due to a tax dispute with the Uttar Pradesh government. So far from being the newest Grand Prix circuit, Buddh International is perhaps best described as the newest former Grand Prix circuit.

The current newest Grand Prix circuit is the Hanoi Street Circuit, which is slated to hold the inaugural Vietnamese Grand Prix on 5 April this year. This is a temporary circuit, around the streets of Hanoi (as its name implies), but including a purpose-built section that will be a public road when the Grand Prix is not in town. Construction was completed in February.

Announced in November 2018, the Vietnamese Grand Prix was the first new race to be approved under the ownership of Liberty Media, which took over Formula One in 2017. Former F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone had previously considered plans for such a race, but abandoned the idea as there were already five races in Asia at the time. He also acknowledged that the failure of the Korean and Indian Grands Prix raised doubts about the long–term viability of a race in Vietnam (and the Malaysian Grand Prix has also dropped off the calendar since then.)

Only time will tell if he was right!
